Our range of bifold doors in Cambridge

We supply aluminium bifold doors in two to seven panel configurations, folding in or out, left or right, with a traffic door option so you can nip to the garden without folding the whole set. uPVC bifolds are available for smaller openings. For more on the material itself, see our aluminium doors Cambridge page.

Bifold doors designed around your opening

Configuration

Bifold doors designed around your opening

The configuration matters as much as the door. How many panels, which way they fold, which side they stack and whether you include a traffic door all change how the room works day to day. We plan this with you at the survey rather than selling you a standard set. You can see recent installations in our gallery.

Options include:

  • Two to seven panels, folding in or out
  • Traffic door for everyday use without opening the full set
  • Any RAL colour on aluminium, including dual colour inside and out
  • Low or flush thresholds for step-free access
  • Integrated blinds within the glass units
Feel secure in your home

Security

Feel secure in your home

A wall of glass has to be as secure as a wall of brick. Our bifolds use multi-point locking on the traffic door and lead panel, shoot bolts locking intermediate panels top and bottom, internally glazed toughened glass and anti-lift hardware on the running gear.

We are FENSA registered and every installation carries a 10 year guarantee. Bifolds are the least forgiving door type to fit. If the track is even slightly out of level, panels bind and gaskets leak, so our own installers treat the installation as the product, not an afterthought.

Bifold door prices in Cambridge

Fitted bifold doors in Cambridgeshire typically run from £3,300 to £7,250 depending on material, span and panel count, with most customers paying around £4,800. Aluminium sits at the upper end, uPVC at the lower. Adding integrated blinds to a three pane set can add up to £4,000, so weigh that option carefully. These figures are indicative. FAQs

    Bifold doors Cambridge FAQs

They are, and the premise is worth unpacking because it comes from design trend articles rather than sales figures. What has changed is that slim aluminium sliding doors have become fashionable for very large openings, where their bigger uninterrupted panes suit the architecture, so bifolds are no longer the automatic default they were ten years ago. That is a broader market, not a dying one. For openings where you genuinely want the whole wall to open to the garden, nothing else does what a bifold does, and they remain one of the most requested doors we fit across Cambridge. Choose on how you will use the opening, not on trend pieces.

Yes, and this is one of the most common jobs we do. If you are replacing existing French or patio doors with a bifold of the same width, it is a straightforward swap. If you are widening the opening, the wall almost certainly carries load, so a structural engineer will specify a steel beam or lintel to carry it before the doors go in. That is routine work, but it needs building regulations approval and adds to the cost and timescale. We survey first, tell you exactly what your wall needs, and coordinate with your builder if structural work is involved.

Aluminium is the default choice for good reason. It is strong enough to carry large glass panels on slim frames, it does not warp or swell, and powder coating lasts decades. uPVC costs less and works well on smaller openings of two or three panels, though the frames are chunkier and very wide spans are not advisable. Timber suits period properties and looks the part, but it needs repainting and is vulnerable to movement, which matters on a door with this many moving panels. For most Cambridge extensions we recommend aluminium, and we will show you both against your budget.

A quality aluminium bifold should last 25 to 30 years or more, since the frame does not warp, rot or corrode and the powder coated finish typically carries its own 25 year guarantee against fading. uPVC bifolds last around 20 years. As with any door, the moving parts wear first: rollers, hinges and lock gearboxes, all of which are replaceable without touching the frame, so wear is a repair rather than a replacement. The biggest factor in lifespan is actually the installation, because a set fitted on a level, properly supported track wears evenly, while a badly fitted one grinds its rollers from day one. Ours carry a 10 year guarantee.

Good ones do not, and this is where installation quality shows. Each panel meets the next on compression gaskets, and the whole set relies on the track being dead level so the gaskets seat evenly. A badly fitted bifold whistles and lets in water at the threshold. A properly fitted one seals as tight as any door. If you want a completely flush, step-free threshold, be aware it offers slightly less weather resistance than a raised one, so on exposed elevations we usually suggest a low rather than fully flush option. We will recommend the right threshold for your site.

It depends what you value. Bifolds open almost the entire wall, which nothing else matches, but when closed the many frames interrupt the glass. Sliding doors are the opposite. When closed you get huge uninterrupted panes and the best view, but only half to two thirds of the opening ever actually opens. Honest question: how many days a year will you fully open the wall? If the answer is a handful, and the view matters daily, a sliding door may serve you better. If you love the open-wall feel, nothing beats a bifold. We fit both, so our advice is not loaded.

Yes, when properly specified. Each panel locks to its neighbours and into the track with shoot bolts top and bottom, the traffic door carries a full multi-point lock, and the glass is toughened and internally beaded so it cannot be removed from outside. Look for PAS 24 tested doors, which ours are. Aluminium frames are inherently rigid and hard to force. Some insurers ask about key operated locks on all opening panels, which our doors have. The folding format does not make them weaker than French doors. In many respects the interlocking panels make the set stiffer once locked.

Keep the bottom track clean. That is 90 percent of it. Grit in the track is what wears rollers, so brush or vacuum it out regularly, particularly after windy weather. Wipe frames and gaskets with soapy water a few times a year, and apply a light silicone lubricant to hinges, rollers and locking points annually. Powder coated aluminium never needs painting and holds its colour for decades. If a panel starts to catch or the set stiffens, the running gear usually needs a minor adjustment rather than repair, and anything in the first ten years is covered by our guarantee anyway.

A replacement into an existing opening is typically one day, sometimes stretching into a second morning for larger sets, since each panel has to be hung and adjusted individually and the alignment work is precise. Your home is secured overnight if the job runs on. Where the opening is being created or widened, the structural work happens first, usually with your builder, and we fit the doors once the steel is in and the opening is formed. We measure after the structural opening is complete, since made-to-measure doors need the real dimensions, and manufacture typically takes a few weeks from there.

Usually not for a like-for-like replacement of existing doors under permitted development. Enlarging an opening does not normally need planning permission either on a standard house, though the structural work needs building regulations sign-off. The exceptions are listed buildings, which need consent for almost any alteration, and conservation areas, where Cambridge City Council can restrict changes, particularly visible ones. Most bifolds go into rear elevations, which are less sensitive. Flats need permission more often. If your property falls into any of these categories, we will flag it at the survey and point you to the right process.

A UPVC window at our property in St Ives suffered burn damage from a mirror that had been placed on the ledge. We got a replacement from HWBP which was then expertly fitted by Daniel. He was masterful at his craft, highly experienced and a pleasure to chat with!
I'd highly recommend HWBP for windows, doors etc.

Can highly recommend HWBP. I had a new set of french doors and a new window installed. Penny and Jaron handled the whole process from start to finish incredibly well; quick and clear communication, good advice and happy to answer any questions. The final installation was top drawer.
