Our range of aluminium doors in Cambridge
Aluminium bifold doors for wide folding openings, sliding patio doors for the largest uninterrupted glass, French doors with slim contemporary frames, and residential entrance doors. All thermally broken, all made to measure.
Style
Slim frames, more glass
The point of aluminium is what you do not see. Its strength allows frame profiles roughly half the width of uPVC carrying much larger panes, so the door becomes mostly glass. On a rear extension in Cambridge, where the garden view is the whole point, that difference is obvious the moment the doors go in. You can see recent installations in our gallery.
Options include:
- Any RAL colour, with anthracite grey, black and bronze the most popular
- Dual colour, with a different finish inside and out
- Matt, gloss and textured powder coat finishes
- Flush and low threshold options
- Panel and glazing designs for entrance doors
Security
Feel secure in your home
Aluminium frames are inherently rigid, and forcing one is genuinely hard work. On top of that, our doors carry multi-point locking, anti-snap and anti-pick cylinders, internally beaded toughened glass and PAS 24 tested hardware throughout.
We are FENSA registered and every installation is covered by a 10 year guarantee, though a powder coated aluminium door will outlast that guarantee two or three times over. Our own installers handle every job from survey to final adjustment.
Aluminium door prices in Cambridge
Aluminium is the premium tier, and pricing varies more than uPVC because most sets are large and made to order. As a rough guide, expect to pay more than the equivalent uPVC doors Cambridge, with aluminium bifolds in Cambridgeshire typically running from around £4,000 to £7,250 depending on span and panel count, and sliding sets similar. What you get for it is a 20 to 30 year working life and frames that hold their finish throughout. For an exact figure, get in touch or use the form below and we will price your actual opening.
FAQs
Aluminium doors Cambridge FAQs
Three practical reasons. Strength, which allows slim frames and much larger panes of glass, so wide openings that are impossible in uPVC are routine in aluminium. Lifespan, since powder coated aluminium lasts 20 to 30 years or more without fading, warping or swelling. And stability, because aluminium barely moves with temperature, so large doors keep operating smoothly year after year. The trade-off is cost. On a small standard doorway, uPVC does the job for less and we will say so. On large sliders, bifolds and contemporary extensions, aluminium is worth every pound and is what we recommend.
Old ones were. Aluminium conducts heat, and doors fitted in the 1970s and 1980s had solid metal frames that ran freezing and streamed with condensation. Modern aluminium doors are thermally broken, meaning a continuous insulating barrier of polyamide separates the inner and outer halves of the frame, so heat cannot travel through the metal. Combined with current double glazing, a thermally broken aluminium door meets the same building regulations as any other and achieves comparable energy ratings to uPVC. If your memory of aluminium is a cold, wet-framed slider from decades ago, the material has genuinely changed.
Realistically 30 years and often more, which is why aluminium is specified on commercial buildings where nobody wants to replace doors twice a decade. The frame itself does not rot, rust, warp or swell, and marine grade powder coating is typically guaranteed for 25 years against fading and flaking. The parts that wear are the moving components, hinges, rollers and lock gearboxes, and these are all replaceable without touching the frame. Our installations carry a 10 year guarantee, but in practice an aluminium door is usually the last one that opening will ever need while you own the house.
Effectively any. Aluminium is powder coated, and the RAL system offers around 200 standard colours plus textured and metallic finishes, so you are not limited to a foil library the way you are with uPVC. Anthracite grey remains the runaway favourite in Cambridge, with black, bronze and muted greens increasingly popular on period and heritage work. Dual colour is also an option, for example anthracite outside with white inside to match your interior. The finish is factory applied and baked on, so it needs no repainting and holds its colour for decades, including on south facing elevations.
Roughly half the sightline. Where a uPVC sliding door interlock might be 80 to 100mm of visible frame, slimline aluminium systems get that down to 40 to 50mm, and some premium sliders go slimmer still. Across a full rear opening that difference adds up to a substantially larger glass area and a cleaner look. It matters most on sliding and bifold doors, where frames repeat across the span. This is also why aluminium suits contemporary architecture. The frames read as thin dark lines around the glass rather than as chunky white borders, and the garden view takes over.
Among the most secure available. The material is the starting point, since an aluminium profile is far harder to deform or force than plastic, and the frames hold locking hardware rigidly in place. Our doors add multi-point locks, shoot bolts on secondary leaves and panels, anti-snap cylinders, protected hinges and internally beaded toughened glass, all tested to PAS 24. Insurers treat modern aluminium doors favourably for the same reasons. Large glazed doors sometimes worry people on security grounds, but the glass is toughened, cannot be removed from outside, and the frame it sits in is the strongest on the market.
Less than any other door material. Wash the frames with warm soapy water two or three times a year to keep the powder coat clean, keep the tracks of sliding and bifold doors free of grit, and lubricate hinges and locks lightly once a year. That is the whole job. There is no painting, staining or sealing, ever, and the finish does not peel or flake. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent cleaners, which can dull the coating. If you do nothing at all, the door will still work. Regular cleaning simply keeps the finish looking new for the full life of the door.
Match the door to the opening and how you live. patio doors Cambridge give the largest uninterrupted glass and the best view, ideal where the doors stay closed most of the year. bifold doors Cambridge open almost the whole wall, ideal if you genuinely use the garden as an extra room in summer. French doors Cambridge suit smaller openings and traditional properties. Entrance doors bring the same slim, solid feel to the front of the house. There is no universally right answer, and the honest one depends on your opening width and habits, which is exactly what our survey works through with you.
Increasingly, yes. The classic pairing is a period property with a contemporary rear extension, where slim aluminium glazing against original brickwork is now a signature look across Cambridge. Muted colours, bronze, black, anthracite and heritage greens, sit far more comfortably against Victorian brick than white plastic does. On front elevations of period homes, and in conservation areas, more traditional styles may be expected, and a listed building will need consent for any change. Our advice is straightforward. To the rear, aluminium is often the best looking option an older house can have. To the front, we will guide you case by case.
A straight replacement is usually done in a day, with larger bifold and sliding sets occasionally running into a second day for final adjustment, since precise alignment is what makes big doors run smoothly for the long term. Your home is always secure overnight. Because every aluminium door is made to order in your chosen size, configuration and colour, manufacture typically takes a few weeks from survey to fitting, slightly longer than stock uPVC products. We survey, confirm the specification with you in writing, and agree the installation date in advance, so there are no surprises on timing.
