What happens if I don't replace my windows?
Nothing dramatic overnight, but the costs accumulate quietly. Failed sealed units lose their insulating gas, so you pay more to heat the same rooms, typically 10 to 15 per cent more than with modern glazing. Perished seals let in draughts and, eventually, water, which can rot sills, damage plaster and encourage damp and mould around the reveals. Worn locks and brittle frames are a security weakness, and some insurers ask about window condition. Condensation worsens, misted units look worse each year, and your EPC rating suffers, which matters when selling or remortgaging. Old windows won’t usually fail catastrophically; they just cost you steadily in heat, repairs and eventual property value. Delaying is fine short-term, but it isn’t free.
