How often should you replace your home windows?
There’s no fixed schedule, but the practical answer is every 20 to 30 years for uPVC, 30 to 45 for aluminium, and potentially longer for well-maintained timber. The sealed double glazed units inside any frame last 20 to 25 years, so that tends to set the rhythm. Rather than counting years, watch for the symptoms: condensation between the panes, draughts around the frame, handles and hinges that stick, water ingress, or rooms that lose heat noticeably faster than they used to. Individual failed units can be reglazed without replacing the whole window, which is worth doing when frames are still sound. Most households end up replacing all their windows once, perhaps twice, in the time they own a home.
