Do uPVC windows devalue property?
On most UK homes, no. uPVC is the standard window material across the country, and buyers of ordinary semis, terraces and detached houses expect it. New uPVC double glazing generally adds value, or at least removes a negotiating point, because buyers know they won’t face a £5,000-plus bill after moving in. The exception is period property. On a Victorian terrace, a Georgian townhouse or a cottage, replacing original timber sashes with uPVC can genuinely hurt value and saleability, sometimes by more than the windows cost, because character buyers actively avoid it. In conservation areas it may not be permitted anyway. Rule of thumb: if your street is full of uPVC, you’re fine. If it’s full of timber sashes, think carefully.
