What is the disadvantage of having aluminium windows?
Cost is the big one. Aluminium windows run £700 to £1,600 per fitted window, roughly 25 to 40 per cent more than uPVC and sometimes double, which adds thousands across a whole house. Because aluminium conducts heat readily, frames must include a thermal break to insulate properly; modern systems handle this well, but cheap or older aluminium without a decent thermal break feels cold and can attract condensation on the frame in winter. Repairs to powder-coated finishes are harder than touching up timber, since scratches can’t simply be painted over. And on period properties, slim modern aluminium can look out of place. For most buyers, though, the honest summary is that aluminium’s main disadvantage is the price tag, not the performance.
