Can you put burglar bars on aluminium windows?
Yes, security bars and grilles can be fitted to aluminium windows, either fixed to the surrounding masonry or, with the right brackets, to the frame itself. Fixing to brickwork is preferable, as it avoids compromising the frame’s thermal break and warranty. That said, bars are rarely necessary on modern aluminium windows. Aluminium is inherently stronger than uPVC, and current systems come with multi-point locking, internally glazed beading so the glass can’t be removed from outside, and optional laminated security glass. Many are tested to PAS 24 or Secured by Design standards. If security is the concern, upgrading to laminated glazing and certified hardware usually achieves more than bars, looks better and doesn’t create a fire-escape problem in bedrooms.
