Are 30 year old windows old?
Yes. Windows fitted in the mid-1990s have outlived their design life on every count. The sealed double glazed units in them were built to last 20 to 25 years, early uPVC profiles were less UV-stable than modern ones and often show discolouration and brittleness by now, and the glazing itself predates modern energy standards by a wide margin. A window from 1996 might have a U-value around 3.0; a new A-rated window achieves 1.4 or better, roughly twice the insulation. Hardware from that era also lacks modern multi-point locking. Some 30-year-old timber windows soldier on with maintenance, and the odd well-made uPVC unit survives, but as a rule, windows of that age are costing you money and are due for replacement.
