Is it worth replacing 20 year old windows?
Often, though it’s less clear-cut than at 25 or 30 years. Twenty years is roughly the design life of a double glazed unit, so yours are due even if the frames look fine. Ask three questions. Are the units failing, with condensation or misting between the panes? Are rooms draughty or noticeably cold near the glass? Do handles, hinges and locks still work smoothly? If you’re seeing two or three of those, replacement makes sense and will cut heating bills by 10 to 15 per cent. If the windows are performing well, you might get another five years, or spend far less on new sealed units and hardware in the existing frames. Get an honest local installer to assess them rather than a salesperson.
