Why is composite better than uPVC?
Composite windows, usually timber frames clad externally in aluminium, combine the strengths of both materials. Inside you get real wood, which looks warmer and suits period interiors. Outside, the aluminium skin takes the weather, so there’s no repainting and the timber core is protected from rain and UV. Thermally they perform superbly because wood is a natural insulator, and lifespans of 40 years or more are realistic. Against uPVC, composites offer slimmer frames, better looks, longer life and stronger green credentials. The catch is cost: composite windows typically run two to three times the price of uPVC, which is why they’re mostly specified for architect-designed homes, conservation-sensitive projects and self-builds. Better product, yes. Better value for the average house, debatable.
