Do timber windows last longer than uPVC?
Yes, provided you maintain them. A well-looked-after hardwood window can last 40 to 60 years and often longer; there are Victorian sashes still working after more than a century. uPVC manages 20 to 35 years. The catch is in that word “maintained”. Timber needs repainting or revarnishing every one to five years depending on the finish and exposure, and neglected timber rots, at which point its lifespan collapses below uPVC’s. So the real comparison is between a material that lasts decades with regular attention and one that lasts a shorter time with none at all. If you’ll genuinely keep up the maintenance, or pay someone to, timber outlasts uPVC comfortably. If you won’t, uPVC is the safer bet.
