Which is cheaper, uPVC or wood windows?
uPVC is much cheaper. A fitted uPVC casement window costs £400 to £900, while a timber casement of the same size starts around £900 to £1,200, with hardwood costing considerably more. Across a three-bed house, uPVC comes in at £4,000 to £8,500 against roughly £10,000 or more for timber. The gap grows over time, too. Timber needs repainting or revarnishing every few years at a cost of around £100 in materials per window plus your time or a decorator’s fee, while uPVC needs nothing beyond an occasional wash. Timber wins on looks, longevity and suitability for period properties, and it’s often required in conservation areas. But on pure cost, uPVC wins at purchase and keeps winning for decades afterwards.
